MEET THE JUNIOR GUILD
Our summer activities kicked off in June with a joyful graduation dinner celebrating Monserrat. She enthusiastically shared her hopes and dreams and was very appreciative for the gifts presented to her along with a $500 certificate towards her education. She is now enrolled at Pasadena City College.
July was a trip to The Discovery Cube, a unique Environmental Stewardship Museum. We were educated about recycling, earthquake proofing and energy efficiency in the home. The girls were very competitive in the hands-on interactive adventures!
In August we were enthralled by The Nature of Wildworks presentation of majestic California birds. With this up-close raptors experience we learned the habits and personal stories of hawks, falcons and owls. Hooty, the Barn Owl, with her heart shaped face, was the most entertaining.
No summer is complete without a trip to Bowlmor and the 6-12 year old girls from Emergency Placement Center joined the
fun with bumper lane rails! They will now participate in our activities and of course the Halloween “Boo at the LA Zoo” was a trick-or-treat extravaganza for all. The Birthday Committee works diligently to acknowledge each girls on their special day.
Christmas is fast upon us and we’re awaiting the 12th annual arrival of our favorite Santa (aka John Gibson, brother of OGJ members Patty Carlson and Gail Kelly) to present wonderful gifts to each child. This year’s event will include ALL THE CHILDREN OF MARYVALE including the 6-12 year old boys from the Emergency Placement Center. Directed by Sister Trang, the Children’s Choir will perform; plus many more surprises! Please join this festive event on December 2, 2017.
Congratulations to Susan Frazier, along with two friends, who were recently honored by the Calabasas City Council for their heroic efforts in performing CPR and saving the life of a woman in distress. We’re thankful that Susan completed CPR Training at Maryvale!
Guild members plan and participate in enrichment activities for the young women, including monthly field trips to fun and safe local venues.
Past adventures have included a fun and informative visit to the Discovery Cube of Los Angeles. The skeleton riding a bicycle is just one exhibit example.
Junior Guild members display the Christmas stockings each child received at the Christmas Party in December. The boys at the Emergency Placement Shelter were presented with Blue Stockings!
Maryvale graduate and LAOG scholarship recipient, Monserrat, with her new bike — one of many presents given to her by the Juniors.
Other fun activities Junior Guild members are responsible for are celebratory birthday dinners for the young women, which are held every other month at a local restaurant. These casual dinners with the birthday girls are filled with fun and lively conversation, and, of course, birthday gifts and cake!
