Junior Guild

There’s more than one way to provide support to the Maryvale Orphanage.

The Orphanage Guild Juniors, or Junior Guild as we now call it, was established in 1954 as a volunteer support group for the girls of Maryvale. Through Maryvale’s Enrichment Program, Guild members are able to make a positive difference in the lives of young women living at the orphanage by becoming friends and mentors. It’s through such strong, stable relationships that these young women gain self-confidence and worth—critical life skills as they prepare for a successful future beyond Maryvale’s doors.

Guild members plan and participate in enrichment activities for the young women, including monthly field trips to fun and safe local venues.

Past adventures have taken them to the historical Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round, where they rode the carousel, plus were entertained by two highly trained mini-therapy horses and treated to a plush pony gift provided by Wells Fargo.

“Boo at the L.A. Zoo” with spooky costumed characters roaming among the zoo animals, a creepy corn stalk maze, a musical puppet show, crafts and a Halloween Dance Block Party!

Other field trips have included beach cleanups, bowling, museums, fire station tours, Special Olympics summer games, Gentle Barn (a ranch for abused farm animals), a docent-guided educational session at the Malibu Lagoon & Wetlands and the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium.

Keeping Up With the Juniors

Great news: We raised $3,500 for our Maryvale high school graduates! Thanks to those of you who generously gave to our graduation fund, the young women who graduated this year received their traditional heart bracelet with their name inscribed, and all college-bound graduates received a laptop computer and printer. Each young woman also received a gift card worth $200. It’s a very special accomplishment for these young women to graduate. Congratulations to the girls and thank you to everyone who gave to this year’s fund and made a difference!

Thanks to the Junior Guild members, the young women of Maryvale also enjoy a festive Christmas party each year that ensures no one goes without during the holiday season. “Santa’s elves” work diligently to plan it and fill huge stockings with lots of wonderful gifts for the young women. This year’s Christmas party will be held on December 3, 2016!
Other fun activities Junior Guild members are responsible for are celebratory birthday dinners for the young women, which are held every other month at a local restaurant. These casual dinners with the birthday girls are filled with fun and lively conversation, and, of course, birthday gifts and cake!
